This Contemporary Design Icon Looks Even Better Shot By One of our Favorite Photogs

It might be funny to associate a photographer with a single color, but when we think of Stockholm photographer Tekla Severin, pink is the shade that immediately springs to mind. Scrolling through her Instagram, there's definitive evidence that she has shot other colors, but in our mind Severin lives in some Bofill–designed paradise of rose tones and geometric lines. So it makes perfect sense that New Tendency, the ever-chic Berlin-based design brand, would hire Severin to style and shoot its pink Meta Side Table, released earlier last year.

The Candy-Colored Ceramics Collection We’re Coveting

The new spring collection from Felt + Fat — the Philadelphia-based ceramics studio founded by RISD architecture grad Wynn Bauer and former Tyler School of Art glass major Nate Mell — looks like its cups, plates and bowls were colored with the powder of chalky-sweet candy hearts. Featuring matte pale pinks and swirls of sage, plus a bright and poppy blue and yellow, the tableware is as suitable for a shelf display as it is for a bustling dinner party — after all, the porcelain clay pieces can be found in restaurants all around the Philly scene.

These Colorful Vases Are the Latest Sign that Acrylic Is on the Rise

Remember when we named the California Light and Space art movement one of the top trends to watch in 2017? Well, the evidence just keeps mounting. Seoul design trio Hattern say their new series of two-tone acrylic vases were inspired by the way Impressionist painters tried to capture the effects of changing light quality on nature, but we can't help but see elements of Vasa, Helen Pashgian, and Peter Alexander's work. Is acrylic the new marble?

LRNCE modern marrakech textiles

A Belgian Textile and Fashion Designer By Way of Marrakech

With an aesthetic that's part Proenza, part Aelfie, LRNCE is the textiles and accessories label you get when a trained Belgian fashion designer moves to Marrakech. Founded in 2013 by Laurence Leenaert and inspired by tribal rituals, the line includes super modern, thickly embroidered rugs; sandals that mix materials like raffia, rope, and suede; graphic-printed kimonos; plus bags, ceramics, and other objects. In other words, traditional Moroccan handcrafts as distilled through the lens of contemporary graphics and design.

This New Italian Studio Makes Textiles Inspired by Modern Art

Studio Testo, founded last year in Milan by two Italian art directors and visual researchers, makes work that's easily accessible and understood — cushions, wall textiles, upholstery fabrics, and pouches that are pretty and on-trend, what with their overlapping collages of line and organic shape. But take a deep dive into the two women's Tumblr or Instagram, and you'll see an incredibly wide and varied set of influences that have been synthesized into their current aesthetic.

Iacoli & McAllister

Iacoli & McAllister’s New Collection is a Stellar Evolution

Sometimes, the stars align and you get this: a collaboration between one of our favorite furniture designers (Iacoli & McAllister), the most inventive glass artist we know (John Hogan), and a photographer who's quickly becoming the design world's ace in the hole (Charlie Schuck). But in this case, those stars are literal as well as metaphorical: The new collections shown here today by Iacoli & McAllister are named after specific stars in the zodiac constellations.

Ria Leigh’s Pottery Is Part Ancient, Part Avant-Garde

So much of the neo-ceramics movement over the past few years has focused on the medium's graphic aspects — how to slab-build the most intricate geometric shapes, or how to apply the most avant-garde patterning — that it's sometimes easy to forget just how primordial and organic a process creating pottery really is. Ria Leigh, a Seattle-based ceramicist who also works in textiles and painting, somehow makes work that easily straddles the two aesthetics.

Sight Unseen x Bower for 29Rooms

We Outfitted Fashion Week’s Coolest Pop-Up With This Painted-Plywood Furniture

Refinery29's 29Rooms event is basically a funhouse of art and culture, where each room presents its own mega-Instagrammable moment. But what if you need a teeny tiny break from all that selfie-ing? That's where we came in. When Refinery asked Sight Unseen to curate the 29Rooms lounge area, we turned immediately to Bower, who came back at us just a few hours later with a sketch for this amazing collection.

A New Photographic Series Channels All Our Favorite Trends

When we first met our frequent collaborator Pippa Drummond, it was via a series drawn from her personal portfolio: Using beauty-salon staples, in collaboration with a prop-stylist friend, she created beautiful assemblages with a fair amount of optical trickery. (The fake nails and brushes, disassociated from their typical use, became almost random, abstract shapes.) Her latest work employs an optical-illusion effect as well, but the Barbara Kasten-y aesthetic here is more sophisticated, drawn as it is from a series of high-brow influences.

Dropbox mural by New York graphic designers Aaron Robbs and Alex Proba

A Tech-Office Mural is the Ultimate Canvas for These Graphic Designers

By now, the large-scale mural has become something of a familiar, de rigueur decoration for tech HQs — the past few years have seen everything from Trek Matthews for Dolby Labs, to Serena Mitnik-Miller for Facebook, Ian Ross for Lyft, Camille Walala (also for Facebook) and more. But this latest might be our favorite yet: Commissioned for Dropbox's 26,000-square-foot Flatiron office in New York, the mural we're featuring today is a collaboration between New York graphic designers and former Kickstarter co-workers Aaron Robbs and Alex Proba of Studio Proba.
