See Sabine Marcelis’s Real-Life Version of Mondrian’s Most Famous Painting

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the launch of Theo Van Doesburg's seminal magazine, De Stijl, in 1917, and Rotterdam-based designer Sabine Marcelis recently helped carve out a space at the Cannes Film Festival to honor the art and design movement that adopted its name. For the festival's Dutch Pavilion, Marcelis brought to life Mondrian's famed 1935 painting "Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow" by building a 3-D framework of black lines inset with gradient glass panels, then punctuating it with primary colored versions of her signature Voie Lights and Candy Cubes.

The Cool Girl Cape Town Jewelry Brand At the Top of Our Wish List

Called Waif, the line is a labor of love by former ad woman and self-taught jewelry designer Gisele Human, who we've been assiduously following on Instagram, waiting for news of a new collection to drop. We got our wish this week when Human unveiled her Technicolor Melodrama collection, in which many pieces mix Human's signature metals with stones like malachite, sodalite, and Dalmatian jasper.

When Paintings Become Sculptures: Jaime Keiter’s Frank Stella–Inspired Ceramics

When Jaime Keiter made a move to Atlanta last year, she decided it was time focus on her artwork, which included a series of simple, geometric pencil drawings on paper. “Moving to a new place gave me a new perspective on life, and I had less pressure to make art that was formulaic,” explains Keiter. After a friend suggested they join a ceramic studio on a whim, Keiter’s vision for her one-of-a-kind ceramic sculptures became fully formed. “I had been thinking of a way to make paintings that are unexpected — in a medium other than paper and wood. In the ceramics studio, it all sort of clicked."

Here at Sight Unseen, summer has traditionally been our quietest season, a time when we process the chaos of the spring and meditate on what our future might hold. This year, that also means unearthing stories that might have fallen by the wayside, like the new collection CC-Tapis unveiled in Milan this April. We found their showroom at the end of an epic day of walking and the cool space inside — designed for the occasion in dark lacquer and raw wool by Faye Toogood — was one of the best things we saw all week.

The New Douglas & Bec Collection is a Study in Modern Glam

As of this year, Bec Dowie and her father, Douglas Snelling — founders of the New Zealand–based design studio, Douglas and Bec — have been in business for a decade. To commemorate the occasion, they’re releasing a brand-new collection of furniture and lighting that pays homage to traditions nearly a century old. The collection, which the pair call ARCH, takes its cues from the 1920s and '30s, an era when furniture was more deeply embedded in the key moments of one’s everyday.

The Most Epic New Furniture Collection We Spotted At ICFF

If you didn't know that New York designer Anna Karlin had a background in set design, you might have guessed from this latest batch of photographs, showcasing the collection she just launched at ICFF in an appropriately brooding setting. Full of luxurious, sculptural pieces of lighting and furniture, the latest collection showcases Karlin’s interest in constantly tinkering with different mediums, as the pieces move from blown glass and carved marble works to larger endeavors like cast bronze, wooden and metal sculptures that hang suspended off a wall-mounted peg rack.

A Touch of Surrealism in a Sea of Pink, at The Future Perfect’s New Secret Space

We were so busy with our own events during NYCxDesign that we hardly made it anywhere else. But you couldn't have paid us to miss Outlines, the debut show at The Future Perfect's new, secret Noho space, and the first ever exhibition by New York designer Leilani Zahn. We know Leilani primarily as an amazing interior designer and stylist, but Outlines marked the debut of her design studio For Reference, and the exhibition featured her soft goods and lighting as well as tweaks on furniture by De La Espada and a series of gorgeous mobiles and sculptures by her husband (and SU alum), Karl Zahn.

A Designer-Made Breakfast Cafe at the Venice Biennale

For the opening of the Venice Biennale last week, the city's A plus A gallery became a three-day Breakfast Pavilion — part curatorial project, part café — where art could be discussed, produced, performed and eaten. Artists hosted and conceptualized the meals, while more than two dozen designers outfitted the space with furniture and objects.
