The New Douglas & Bec Collection is a Study in Modern Glam

As of this year, Bec Dowie and her father, Douglas Snelling — founders of the New Zealand–based design studio, Douglas and Bec — have been in business for a decade. To commemorate the occasion, they’re releasing a brand-new collection of furniture and lighting that pays homage to traditions nearly a century old. The collection, which the pair call ARCH, takes its cues from the 1920s and '30s, an era when furniture was more deeply embedded in the key moments of one’s everyday.

We don't mean to be biased towards our American compatriots for the third day in a row, but the new Apparatus collection is, in a word, stunning — translucent, cast-resin tables topped by ash slabs lacquered in a high-gloss, rust-colored hue; patinated brass lamps with bases sheathed in a buttery calf suede; and slip-cast porcelain pendants punctuated by dangling brass spheres.

Lisa Mayock: Welcome to Big Biba

If there's anyone we would trust to guide us through the annals of vintage fashion literature, it's Lisa Mayock, co-founder of the sadly defunct, cool-girl label Vena Cava and now a Brooklyn-based creative consultant. So we were pretty thrilled when we sent out a call for this column a few months back and Mayock immediately responded with one of her most beloved and referenced books, BIG BIBA: Inside the Most Beautiful Store in the World. The book traces the short life of the 7-story Big Biba department store, which opened in 1973 after the fashion label's massive success as first a mail-order catalog and then a series of London boutiques.
