Win $500 Worth of Colorful Design Objects From Woonwinkel!

Portland has a lot of things going for it, from amazing food and scenery to a culture that’s decidedly maker-friendly. But the one thing it’s certainly not known for is an embrace of vibrant color — its vibe is much more earthy and norm-core and dark, like its notoriously moody weather. That’s why the team behind the home store Woonwinkel weren’t terribly surprised when, having set up shop on Portland’s West End back in 2011 with all kinds of pinks and mints and metallics in the window, they quickly attracted the kind of color-deprived customers who would shower them in sentiments like, “Your store is like sunshine!” Co-founders Kristin Van Buskirk and Erica Essink had always planned to use their shop to embrace the well-made and handcrafted, and they still do, but in a town where “everything is crafted, local, and independent, from donuts to whiskey,” says Van Buskirk, color became their definitive calling card.

It wasn’t a stretch for either of them. Before Woonwinkel, Essink was a first-grade teacher who had a particular fondness for all things pink, while Van Buskirk still works as a color design director for Nike, where she helps develop the brand’s seasonal palettes and was partly behind its current crop of glowy iridescent running shoes. Both partners are suckers for the muted pastel trend, and they particularly love combining brights with neutrals, taking care to balance out their store “with lots of wood, clay, and rattan,” says Van Buskirk.

To celebrate their new “Color Your Life” campaign, Van Buskirk and Essink shot three color-trend vignettes for Sight Unseen — ’80s Desert (top), Warm Metallics (below), and Bold Pattern (bottom) — and are offering our readers the chance to get the look with a $500 gift certificate to woonwinkelhome.com. To enter the giveaway, just check out the site, tell us your favorite item, and enter both it and your email below by December 15. We’ll contact the winner that day.
