“When I say compress, I just mean I squish the clay together. It’s building a form in a way that’s similar to coil building. But for, say, the vase the right, I’ll compress the outside as well and leave all the handwork and texture exposed. I could slip and score, which is a common way of bringing two pieces of clay together, but I find if you compress well enough if goes so much quicker. And I like the texture. When I’m squishing, there’s that texture I get from my own fingerprints.”
