JUMBO’s Creature Comfort collection is part of the studio’s ongoing research into the science of affect — how physical objects make us feel. In this case, studio partners Justin Donnelly and Monling Lee were directly inspired by our collective past few months in isolation. “While our physical worlds have gotten smaller, it seems like the digital universe has ballooned,” the designers explain. “We tried to capture some of that tension between the physical and the digital, and the friction between the real and the surreal.” The resulting pieces include a neoprene-upholstered sofa meant to resemble a tennis ball, a slumped aluminum mirror that mimics the fabric of a toilet-paper roll, a silicone lamp whose anemone-like extrusions look like a mop, and a chartreuse glazed aluminum decanter to facilitate all the wine we’ve been imbibing.
