Many architects eventually scale down, creating furniture that’s for — and in dialogue with — their spaces, but not many make the architecture-to-furniture translation quite so literal as Rachel Shillander of Lland. Trained as an architect but currently running a design studio while working in construction, Shillander’s furniture and lighting typically reinterprets cladding materials like plaster, stone, and masonry; her new series is inspired by copper roof finials and plumbing pipes, the latter of which are normally hidden inside walls and here take center stage.
