A Creative Director Brings His Fashion-World Cred to Candles

There’s a real difference of opinion around here when it comes to candles: Monica once publicly stated she “doesn’t have time for them” while I currently own more than a dozen. But both of us fell in love with Overose, a new Parisian candle and perfume house founded by Matthieu Belhandouz, the moment we saw these photos. Belhandouz studied fashion design at La Cambre and had a brief stint at Stella McCartney, both of which could explain his keen eye for visuals and his acute understanding of the importance of branding. Though the line launched only a month ago, Belhandouz has already photographed the candles in four different on-trend scenarios — one centered around blush, crushed-red, and emerald velvets, another against a dramatic backdrop of onyx and marble, a third atop a colorful terrazzo, and the last harnessing the natural elements that inform Overose’s woodsy scents, like Virginian cedarwood. The candle itself is made from a sustainable rapeseed wax blend that’s been hand-tinted rose to match its perfectly pink glass container. Even better — though they’re for sale right now only at Colette, they also ship to the U.S. You know the holidays are coming, right?
