Field Tiles was founded in 2018 by Alex Bertman, a former designer at The Standard and Rosewood Hotels, and its debut collection, HM01 (Handmade 01), is handmade in Portugal from natural clays. While the tile industry remains relatively traditional, with a “more is more” philosophy, Field Tiles’s catalog is deliberately limited, its tiles offered exclusively in solid colors (100 of them) and standard formats (16 of them). In lieu of patterns, the HM01 collection gains personality from unique nuances and shading details — no two pieces are exactly alike in either design or dimension, and quite often, they’re not perfectly flat. Those irregular edges, corrugated surfaces, and small imperfections are the hallmark of the collection.
