Fair Report
Our Favorite Finds From the First-Ever Virtual Frieze Art Fair
Much like we ourselves are doing this month with our forthcoming Offsite Online digital fair, the organizers of New York’s Frieze Art Fair decided in the face of the pandemic to convert their show into a virtual viewing room. For those in the art world, the loss of a physical Frieze means the loss of a key moment for discovery, commerce, and networking. But for those of us with no skin in the game — as much as we enjoy attending Frieze IRL — we can’t say we’re totally missing the $50 Uber rides to Randall’s Island, or the inevitable bouts of weird early-spring weather. As journalists and art lovers, the virtual viewing room also offers some very real benefits, like being able to browse, and read the backstory of, pieces we might have missed in the chaos of the fair, or being able to grab the exact images we want for a roundup without having to wait for an exhausted gallery assistant. Read on for a peek at our picks, but we also highly recommend posting up on your sofa this weekend, logging into the viewing room, and cherishing the feeling of really, truly getting to focus on the art. If we’re lucky, the ferry and the thunderstorms will be there next year.
