EDITORS’ LIST
Jill and Monica share their May picks, including a new online vintage destination, Jill’s new Surrealist-inspired radio show, Italian desks on eBay, and the meme account that’s cracking us up.
Jill’s List
![]() One of our favorite Instagram follows, the St. Augustine, Florida–based Kelsey Heinze — whose home is always photographed styled with perfectly on-point vintage objects — launched an online shop this week with partner Isaiah Abenchuchan. Called Villa, the shop sources vintage objects and books with more of an Art Deco/desert slant than Postmodern/midcentury; Georgia O’Keeffe goes to Miami vibes. I already purchased a chrome lamp that honestly might not match any of my décor but I loved it too much to pass up. |
![]() The best thing about following hashtags or creating saved searches is that once in a while, a designer who you think you know backwards and forwards will pop up with an item you’ve never seen before. Case in point, this 1977 Magistretti lamp for O-Luce, which I stalked for several weeks on Live Auctioneers before it sold for nearly $5,000. |
![]() Remember these graphic chairs by Elvire Bonduelle from a few years back? That was the project that introduced us to the Paris-based artist, and we’ve kept up with her on Instagram ever since. A few months ago, this font started popping up on her feed; called Bonduelle One, it’s a contemporary update to “Le Procédé Jacomet,” a 1920s print-reproduction technique that coupled collotype and “pochoirs” (stencils). Bonduelle made a booklet, a lamp, and these paintings employing the type for Three Star Books. |
![]() A friend of Sight Unseen recently sent me a scalloped marble catchall from her new home décor line, Anastasio Home. When I posted it on Instagram, another friend pointed me to a Polish company also making scalloped marble trays (and candleholders). The material here makes them feel more weighty and substantial and timeless as opposed to some of the other scalloped accessories we’ve seen lately. We’d say we’re very into the trend! |
![]() If you feel like you already listened to ~all the music~ during lockdown, might I suggest Frozen Section Radio, a new community-based radio station out of Toronto? Might I particularly recommend Wednesdays from 9-10PM ET, when yours truly has a weekly radio show with three friends? The show is an audio version of the Surrealist parlor game Exquisite Corpse, and it’s *very* fun. Listen live here on Wednesdays or anytime on Mixcloud! |
![]() A must-read article in PIN-UP Magazine this month about how Instagram is changing the way we decorate our homes. “Today’s interior-design trends are not the culmination of some artistic commentary on contemporary society like Constructivism or Art Nouveau. They are a reflection of the online spaces we’re conditioned to spend time in — aesthetics that look good on social media,” writes Taylore Scarabelli. Talk amongst yourselves. |
Monica’s List
![]() I’m really enjoying the bi-monthly newsletter of artist Emily Forgot, called Muse & Maker, in which she shares all sorts of things she’s discovered or loves, from old design books to little-known vintage interiors to new designers to a roundup of her favorite Instagram posts in recent weeks. She also does a great “eBay Edit” where she links to her best finds on eBay sites around the world, including the Italian desk above. |
![]() The craze for colorful hand-blown glass cups continues to grow on Instagram; we love Balefire, Upstate, and Sirius, and now you can add Pattern Play to the list. We linked to her online shop above, but the best way to get her glasses is to follow her IG and watch her Stories for new drops. They sell out fast, obvi. |
![]() I’m extremely impressed with a new business based in Berlin called Look At You, which sells very simple large-scale floor mirrors in customizable sizes ($200-400) that are hand-delivered to your apartment. SOOOO SMART. I’m not sure if mirrors are more affordable to cut in Berlin than in NYC, but otherwise this is a genius genius idea that should definitely be imported here. |
![]() I hate almost all laptop cases ever, but this striped velvet version from Ellies and Ivy is pretty cute. The brand is Danish so who knows about shipping costs to the US, but the colors are really good. There’s also a pink/blue version here. If you check out the rest of this site you’ll chuckle at how it seems to be tailor-made for Scandinavian gen-Z Instagram influencers with Gustaf Westman mirrors, but hey, they’re probably killing it. |
![]() I’m not a big Instagram user to be honest, but as a small business owner myself, I’ve gotten hours of entertainment from this account. Anyone who knows the pain of handling their own customer service will laugh-cry over the terrible interactions chronicled in its posts, many of which involve randos DMing an artist or maker to ask for free stuff. Who does that?!? |
![]() Just a friendly reminder that Goodwill has an online shop where they auction off all sorts of shit from all of their branches, from vintage housewares to sneakers to jewelry. It takes a TON of patience to sort through it all — I didn’t even have the patience to find the best example for the image above, but these two Haeger vases are all right — but fun to search if you’re bored, and everything’s cheap. |
