We Turned a Palm Springs Architectural Marvel Into a Sun-Drenched Lightology Dream Home
Back in the 1970s, if you happened to be the proud owner of a Chicago roller disco, there’s a good chance you might have sought out Gregory Kay — a master electrician, lighting designer, and roller-disco specialist — to plan and install the flashy mirror-ball lighting scheme that your short-shorts-wearing skate fanatics could boogie under. While Kay had moved on to more serious endeavors by the mid-’80s, first with a niche import business called Tech Lighting and then through Lightology, the residential showroom he founded in 2001, his focus remained on the technical side of the business; Lightology, which these days is perhaps better-known for its online presence, still distinguishes itself in part by offering consumers and design professionals “help with the less-glamorous stuff” that has always been Kay’s purview, from recessed lighting layouts, photometrics, lumen outputs, and color temperatures to project planning, fixture schedules, blueprints, visualizations, and virtual staging. But Lightology is also a one-stop shop for lighting and furniture from brands like Artemide and Audo Copenhagen, so when its team approached Sight Unseen hoping to collaborate, we proposed showcasing its offerings in a way that’s very much within our own purview: curating a selection of favorite pieces and installing them into a stunning architectural home in the Palm Springs desert.
To create the shoot below, we teamed up with friends in the design world, pairing Lightology pieces with contemporary works from folks like Arvo Ray, Rug Company, Kalon, and Hubba Hubba, plus vintage finds sourced from favorite LA-area dealers Decorjois and Monte Vision. We also snagged paintings from LA artists Amy MacKay and Josh Stein to add major pops of color. Then, we put it all together into 8 different roomscapes along with our longtime collaborators at Laun, who were originally brought on to helm the interior architecture of the home itself by the team who built it: Studio R+D and Framework Design + Build. The first in a series of environmentally conscious houses that Framework will be developing and designing in California, the now-sold 4,000 square-foot property has floor-to-ceiling windows and double-sided glass breezeways that make it the epitome of indoor/outdoor living, and the perfect sun-drenched backdrop for our vision of a Lightology dream home. We hope it inspires you to create your own.
