Step Into the World of a Beloved Australian Furniture Brand at Its New Space in Sydney
There’s no denying that Instagram has been a source of inspiration and connection — especially in the design world — but it’s also impossible to escape the flattening quality of the social media scroll. Australia’s Ellison Studios, whose furniture takes the best of the ’70s and makes it refreshingly modern, had long been envisioning a move, or an extension, from the digital realm to a physical one, but a traditional showroom didn’t feel quite right. So when an apartment in an iconic Sydney landmark became available, an idea took shape: The Rental. For the next six months, the studio is bringing their atmospheric point of view and the imaginative world-building of a mood board to life, creating a tangible, tactile space you can step into and inhabit for a time.
“While sharing content online is amazing, sharing this space with our friends, collaborators, and clients is bringing with it a deeper sense of connection and community,” says Leigh McKeown, CEO and co-founder of Ellison Studios, who likens it to a modern-day share house (“though much nicer than the ones I experienced when I was younger!” he says). With Australia heading into summer soon, it’s the perfect season for a hangout space like this, with exhibitions, launches, dinner parties, by-appointment showings, and maybe even sleepovers in the works. The Rental occupies a full level in the 1926 Edwards & Co Ltd building, whose original floor-to-ceiling windows and hundred-year-old hardwood floors provide a lovely backdrop for pieces from the studio’s collection, including the tubular Chromeo armchair; the sleek, sandstone-colored Arch chair; and the instantly iconic, ball-footed Yoko coffee table. They’re interspersed with vintage designs that dovetail with and complement them, like Marcel Breuer’s Wassily chair, Akari lights by Isamu Noguchi, and an original stereo system Dieter Rams designed for Braun in the early 1970s.
You’ll also be able to check out the studio’s new Stack sofa in person at The Rental. Their latest seating option, which combines oversized proportions with a low profile, rounded shapes, and movable weighted cushions, is a welcome addition to the exaggerated, slightly Deco and glamorous forms of the modular Muse and the channel-tufted Float sofa and sectional. Available as a 3- or 4-seater, in off-white or rich terracotta upholstery, the Stack has removable covers for easy cleaning. As pristinely beautiful as they are, these are sofas that are meant to be lived with and lived in. Actually, they’re meant to be lounged in. The cozy factor is as high as the style, whether you experience them in The Rental or in the comfort of your own home.
