Pro Tip: Designy Furniture That’s Hiding in Plain Sight
Before I started writing about design 12 years ago, here’s the sum total of what I knew about the luxury furniture company Roche Bobois: I used to drive past one all the time growing up in Columbus, Ohio, and it seemed pretty fancy. And after I started writing about design? Well, let’s just say that assessment didn’t progress much further. Then two weeks ago, I happened to find myself on the French furniture brand’s website, and I had a minor retail epiphany: Not only does Roche Bobois boast some pretty legit, on-trend offerings by designers like Cédric Ragot, Stephen Burks, and even Ettore Sottsass, it has showrooms everywhere — from Scottsdale to Dallas to Denver to Detroit, and that’s just in America — meaning that cutting-edge, designy furniture may actually be closer at hand in the U.S. than we realized. (I mean, good luck finding a Muuto sofa or a Michael Anastassiades lamp in Columbus, Ohio.) Note that Roche Bobois is NOT Ikea, by any stretch — these are designer items with designer price tags. But at least you can go window shopping in your own backyard. Here are a few of our favorites.
