The 40+ Best Things We Saw at Design Miami 2017
One of the best things to come out of Miami this year was actually an Artsy article, which — while written from the point of view of Art Basel — seems to perfectly encapsulate the feverish excitement and flaccid ennui that the whole week seems to induce each December. Of course, don’t take it from us; we didn’t make it down to Miami this year (our all-expenses-paid invitation from NetJets must have gotten lost in the mail). And yet that’s the same suite of emotions we experienced from afar — our jaws dropped when we first caught sight of Demisch Danant’s ombre-backdropped booth, and our eyes rolled when we saw yet another mention of fashion designer du jour Virgil Abloh. Lucky for us, the design side of things seemed particularly strong this year, from the so-weird-it’s-genius idea to recreate Muller Van Severen’s Ghent living room from scratch in an installation for Airbnb, to Chris Schanck’s shimmering, Little Mermaid–colored cabinet for Friedman Benda, to Christopher Prinz’s wrinkled, oil-slick benches for Patrick Parrish. Herewith, our favorite finds from the week.
