Tomato Red is Suddenly Everywhere — Here Are 35 Ways to Bring It Into Your Home
It’s actually too bad we’re publishing this story so close to the holidays, because the sudden resurgence of red as a go-to in furniture, objects, and accessories has nothing to do with Christmas and everything to do with the way we’re constantly reassessing formerly uncool or hard-to-use colors in interiors and objects. In fashion, power red has been on the upswing since the Fall 2017 runways, but it’s begun to pop up in housewares only recently. Hay, of course, included the color in its 2018 palette (hence the Sonos of the same hue); East Fork is already on its second close-to-sold-out run of a crimson Poinsettia glaze; and we were probably Bari Ziperstein‘s number-one champion in bringing a collection of cherry red vases to market. Even architecture firms are getting the memo — Snøhetta recently painted a building on the Norwegian harbor the brightest, cheeriest tomato red.
It isn’t the easiest color to incorporate, there’s no doubt about that — the trick is to steer clear of anything remotely resembling a primary-color trifecta (lest you end up in some frightening Memphis feedback loop) and to pair it with neutrals like lilac, peach, beige, and pale pink. Here are some of our favorite pieces (plus some fashion and beauty because, well, we’re all about a monochromatic lewk).
