Introducing the Iconic Women Collection, Sight Unseen’s Collab with the Brand Dedicated to Design-y Doormats
There are a few pieces of décor that can often be forgotten in the rush to make a house a home. Hardware, certainly, is one of them; another is the humble doormat. (Raise your hand if you consider yourself a “design person” and your doormat is a natural fiber number from your local hardware store.) Whether it sits inside or outside your threshhold, a mat is often the first thing you see when you enter a space, making it your very first chance, as it were, to set the mood. So when Heymat — a Norwegian company dedicated to making the entryway an artistic *moment* with their beautiful, sustainably made mats — approached us last year about collaborating, the answer was an unequivocal yes. We had long admired the brand and their knack for partnerships, like Teklan’s pastel color fields or Hallgeir Homstvedt’s delicate grids, but from the outset we knew we wanted to design something with a more gestural feel. Enter the Iconic Women Collection, a series of indoor mats in three shapes and colorways that celebrate the pioneering spirit of some of our favorite female designers from the past.
Though each mat has the ability to read simply as an abstract composition, the shapes hold deeper meaning for us. For each one, we chose two furniture pieces designed by iconic women in the 1930s, ’50s, ’70s, and ’90s — women who, despite the importance of their work, were so often overlooked or overshadowed in their day. We then overlapped the pieces’ silhouettes and removed any identifying texture and color to create a moody amorphous design that pays quiet homage to the four women, even if we’re not technically allowed to name them (watch the video here to get a better sense!).
Intended for use just inside a front door, patio door, or balcony, the mats are not only the pop of color — and, frankly, joy — your interior needs, they’re also no muss, no fuss, built to withstand high foot traffic, and easily thrown in the wash to clean. It’s one of those interior upgrades you never realized you needed, but once you have it, you won’t know how you lived without it. Currently available for sale via Heymat and Coming Soon — just as soon as you pick your favorite combo.
