We Did a Full Styling Makeover of Jill’s House — Courtesy of Lightology and an Epic Vintage Haul

If you’re a longtime reader of Sight Unseen, it’s possible you’ve seen some version of my home in East Hampton: the just-moved-in IKEA-starter-kit vibe of 2014; the post-renovation feature in Domino in 2020, when the house had a beachy, rustic thing happening; and the post-second-renovation feature last year, where I revealed our baby blue kitchen and double-drenched yellow guest bath. Last month, Monica and I decided to give my home a new, fourth life — a styling makeover, executed as part of our continued collaboration with Lightology, for which we’ve previously shot two other homes we outfitted with the online retailer’s incredibly diverse lighting and furniture offerings. For our third in the series, we paired vintage accessories and art with beautiful, sleek pieces from Lightology’s catalog to create a more sophisticated mood for my space, one befitting the vision I’ve always had of it as a repository for all the design work and knowledge I’ve collected over my 20-plus-year career.

You could call it “the Sight Unseen edit.” After hand-picking our favorite Lightology lights and furniture, and scouring antique markets and Facebook Marketplace for expressive styling pieces, we loaded up my trunk with our finds and set out for the Hamptons. Nordic Knots graciously provided us with a trio of patterned rugs to switch out my basic solids, so we first laid those down and then got to work rearranging my things. In the primary bedroom, we replaced a plain white lamp with one of my favorite-ever design objects: the striped Shogun lamp by Mario Botta for Artemide, with its perforated adjustable shade. In the basement, we traded a too-dim pendant for the lollipop-esque Era chandelier by Ferm Living (which I loved so much I ended up keeping). We moved my beloved Paavo Tynell wicker floor lamp from the basement to the living room, letting it shine next to my bizarro, original-to-the-house bunny-relief fireplace. The guest room got a matching set of impossibly chic chrome table lamps by Visual Comfort to sit atop its reeded nightstands, while the family room got a half moon–shaped Mezzaluna floor lamp by DCW Editions that would provide perfect directional light for reading. And in the kitchen, the black frame of Kelly Wearstler’s Nido chandelier for Visual Comfort tied in perfectly with the ball-footed iron legs of my banquette and the black skeletons of my Friso Kramer chairs.

Sometimes little tweaks are all you need to fall back in love with your space; for me, seeing my house with fresh eyes (again) was honestly a delight. For those of you who are considering a refresh of your own, we — and Lightology — can help! Everything we sourced for this makeover is linked below, except of course the vintage, which hunting for on your own is half the fun.
