In Brussels, New Designs at the Place Where Art, Architecture, and Industry Meet

When we first heard that Belgian architects Kersten Geers and David Van Severen were collaborating with the Kortrijk-born, Turin-based painter Pieter Vermeersch for an exhibition at Maniera Gallery, we became, we'll admit, somewhat unreasonably excited. Our love for Vermeersch's signature gradients is well-documented on this site, and, if you'll recall, Office KGDVS's angular furniture collection was what set off our love for the Brussels-based Maniera all the way back in 2014.

An Architecture Photographer on Ricardo Bofill’s Social-Housing Masterpiece, Walden 7

Ricardo Bofill's Walden 7 is grouped around five courtyards and encircled by curved, terracotta balconies that give the building the appearance of having barnacles. Most of the apartments face both out towards the sea and into one of the courtyards; at many levels, a system of bridges and walkways allow residents an array of vertiginous vistas. We'd seen photos of the place, of course, but when we received these images — taken by trend consultant and travel blogger Pauline Chardin — we had to share.

Inside Villa Stenersen, Oslo’s Under-the-Radar Gem of Modernist Architecture

We first came across Villa Stenersen on a trip to Norway in 2016 and immediately fell in love with the corrugated wall, the glass bricks, the bright blue facade, the free-standing columnal fireplace, and, of course, the colors. Our visit there was so magical that when we heard one of our favorite photographers, Tekla Severin, was visiting Oslo, we implored her to photograph the house for us in all its waiting-to-be-refurbished glory.

Aiming to highlight Twyla’s ability to capture minute texture and detail, we asked four of our favorite architectural photographers to lend us a single image, and then invited four artists to create paintings loosely inspired by their use of shadow, color, line, or shape.

Touring Mexico City With One of Our Favorite Architectural Photographers

IRL, Mexico City really is a charming mishmash of architectural styles, a delicious spot for foodies, and a serious destination for anyone interested in design culture. That’s why, when we saw that one of our favorite photographers — Eric Petschek, the interior designer and architectural photographer behind the Instagram account @cb — was in Mexico City documenting his trip with iPhone and DSLR in hand, we immediately reached out to see if we might publish the results.

In Copenhagen, The Flower Shop As Art Installation

Considering that floral art is the new medium of choice, it was only a matter of time before floral shops became art installations themselves. The new Tableau store in Copenhagen, founded by Danish florist Julius Værnes Iversen, was designed by Copenhagen-based architect David Thulstrup to resemble something more like a gallery, with six architectural podiums made for displaying single arrangements like art.

A Concrete and Pastel Oasis in Spain

Normally we'd dismiss an all-concrete restaurant as a terrible idea — too Meatpacking District circa Sex and the City, too cold and impersonal — but a submission we received today, from the Spanish architecture firm Lucas y Hernández-Gil, may have just opened our minds a little bit. Their interior for Casaplata restaurant in Seville, Spain, softens the chilly material with saturated colors, pale untreated woods, and tactile materials like velvet and perforated metal.

Iridescent Glass and Canary-Yellow Cushions Soften Up This Architectural Furniture Collection

We first fell in love with the bright, geometric designs of up-and-coming Australian designer Elliot Bastianon when we spotted his Donald Judd–esque acoustic paneled bench a few years back. His latest works, on display this month at M2 Gallery in Sydney (reminding us yet again that now would be a perfect time for an Australian vacation), maintain the designer's strong linear emphasis and poppy use of color.

A New Book Documents the Architectural Mash-Ups of One of Earth’s Most Mystical Locales

Pretty much everyone is a travel photographer on Instagram these days, and there's nothing we like better than when one of our favorite photographers heads somewhere far-flung. But for Brian Ferry's latest project — a book called The Deepest Lake, which documents Ferry's 2014 trip to Kashmir — Instagram didn't seem like the proper vehicle on which to be seen. "When I post photos online, it can feel insignificant," Ferry says. "People scroll past it once and then move on. I want people to have the time and the space to really look at a photo, and so I had the idea to make a book."
