Kathryn Bentley's midcentury Los Angeles home

Kathryn Bentley’s LA Home is a Beautiful Showcase for Talented Designers and Friends

When we think about our dream home, here are some of the things we think about: bountiful sunlight and lots of green plants; layered, colorful Moroccan rugs and deep, caramel-colored leather sofas; and tons and tons of intimately personal art, objects, and furniture made by designers we know and love. (And let’s not forget our well-documented penchant for a great yellow and blue.) So imagine our surprise and delight when a sneak peek for this weekend’s T Magazine hit the internet and we came face to face with all of those things packed into one beautiful, mid-century Los Angeles home — owned, no less, by jewelry designer and shop owner Kathryn Bentley of Dream Collective, a woman whose style we’ve admired for years. For the interiors, the story reports, “Bentley traveled to Morocco to buy a selection of midcentury and ’80s and ’90s-era rugs. From there she slowly amassed interesting pieces: a Matteo Grassi dining set from the estate sale of a Dow Chemical heir, a pair of Mario Bellini chairs she found on eBay, a brash, craggy ceramic vessel purchased directly from the L.A. artist Roger Herman and, more recently, a custom maple and linoleum credenza commissioned from the independent furniture maker Doug McCollough. Every item testifies to her gift for collecting unusual, handmade works — as well as her support for the people behind them.”

Those artist friends include SU faves like Bari Ziperstein, Cody Hoyt, Shin Okuda, Peter Shire, Morgan Peck and Jennie Jieun Lee, but two of our favorite things in the space happen to be by Bentley herself: the mustard-and-cobalt oil paintings below, which Bentley says are studies for larger works, and the coiled ceramic extrusions, which the designer makes in a variety of colors. Read on for a look at our favorite images from the piece, then click through for the whole story and even more photos (including her TDF terraced backyard!)
