Furniture Inspired by an Architectural Jewel of the Mediterranean

This month, a special exhibition at Gagosian’s Davies Street gallery in London will see the space arranged to resemble Casa Malaparte’s main room, a stone-floored space with ocean vistas that features in Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 film, Contempt. Tommaso Rositani Suckert, Malaparte’s youngest descendant, has produced editions of three of the most iconic furniture pieces from Casa Malaparte for the exhibition: a table, a bench, and a console, all manufactured in Italy and comprised of solid walnut, pine, Carrara marble, and stone.

This Barcelona Studio Asked a Painter to Choose the Colors of Its New Chair

When Gerrit Rietveld designed his famed Red and Blue Chair in 1917, it wasn't red and blue at all, but plain, unstained beech wood. Only six years later, after his De Stijl collaborator Bart van der Leck suggested he add bright colors, did Rietveld create the version that went on to make history. The same is true, in a way, of the Barcelona studio AOO's Chair 8, whose colors were envisioned by painter Claudia Valsells for a recent collaborative exhibition in Spain.

Jagged, Glacier-Inspired Glass By a California Icon, On View at Hauser + Wirth

Larry Bell's latest exhibition at Hauser + Wirth, on view until April 11, might be the California Light & Space artist's largest presentation of work in New York yet. Called Still Standing, the title refers both to the octogenarian's practice, which shows no signs of slowing, and to what Bell calls his "standing walls" — aka the architecturally-scaled crystalline forms that result from Bell deconstructing his signature colored glass cubes.

Two Berlin Artists, On View at a Café Where Brunch Meets Brutalism

The definition of gallery keeps expanding, and perhaps our favorite new entry is the mezzanine of the year-old café Baldon, located inside architect Arno Brandlhuber’s terraced, brutalist Lobe Block building in the Wedding neighborhood of Berlin. On view until the end of the month is a show that combines two artists of recent interest — Kim Bartelt, whose home and studio we featured here earlier this fall, and Yellow Nose, a Berlin-based studio founded in 2017 by two Taiwanese architects, Hsin-Ying Ho and Kai-Ming Tung.

Nina Cho’s New Mirror Series Asks You to Contemplate Infinity, NBD

“Even though a mirror is two-dimensional, it feels three-dimensional to me,” explains Detroit-based designer Nina Cho, who has been putting reflective surfaces at the center of her work since her debut collection back in 2015. For her latest exhibition, developed by Colony Consult, Cho created a series of geometric, two- and three-toned mirrors called Maung Maung.
