30 Artists and Galleries We Loved During New York Art Week 2017
We can’t quite put our finger on what it was that made this year’s Armory Arts Week feel so fresh. Was it the new venues? After all, NADA moved from Basketball City to Skylight Clarkson North, while Spring/Break moved from the old Post Office to an ex-Condé Nast office at 4 Times Square. Was it the fresh blood — the fact that NADA was even there at all, after years of coinciding with May’s Frieze Fair? Or maybe it was simply the weather — we made the rounds on a gloriously sunny Thursday that made the views at Spring Studios’ Independent fair even better. Whatever the case, we found much to love. We sent our contributing editor Sean Santiago to The Armory show proper in our stead, where he scouted perhaps our favorite thing of the whole week, Elvire Bonduelle’s geometric seating for London’s Ronchini Gallery, above. For the second year running, the ultra-curated Independent was our favorite fair, feeling closest in spirit as it does to our own OFFSITE show, and playing host to an ethereal polyptych of Landon Metz paintings. At all the fairs, colorful geometrics abounded, as did shaggy textiles and a delightful amount of art furniture. Take a tour through our favorites below, and cross your fingers that this year’s Design Week will be just as satisfying.
