Suprematist-Inspired Vases and Lights by An Emerging Ukrainian Design Studio

Over the past few years, we've had many designers cite the Russian Suprematist Kazimir Malevich as an influence — but never before did those designers actually hail from Malevich's hometown of Kiev, Ukraine. "When you live and work in the city where Malevich was born, studied art, and taught at the Art Academy, and when you even have a workshop on the street that bears his name, it’s only a matter of time until his presence starts to inspire your creation," say Arkady Vartanov and Kateryna Sokolova of NOOM, a new, Kiev-based studio launching its first collection of Malevich-inspired vases and lighting at this weekend's Maison & Objet.

Earlier this summer, when we happened to come across not one but two vibrant, late-’80s interviews with Donald Judd in the same week, we decided it was fate telling us to designate today Judd day here on the site, where we’d excerpt text and photos from both. The first interview we’re posting today comes from Donald Judd Cor-Ten, the 72-page volume that accompanied a David Zwirner exhibition of the same name last winter. Here he speaks with curator and art critic Claudia Jolles about his friendship with Richard Serra, his aversion to public commissions, and why we should never refer to his furniture as art.

A Bauhaus-Inspired Artist Makes Color Her Primary Medium

The paintings and wall-based textiles of New York–based Senem Oezdogan are like a Venn diagram where Bauhaus and Suprematism meet — almost as if Anni Albers and Kazimir Malevich were to have a baby. Her fiber-based geometric studies — made by wrapping wood panels in natural rope, punctuated by cotton floss color blocks — are deft executions of straight lines and woven shapes that tease the eye yet retain the softness of a tapestry.

Tauba Auerbach’s Inspirations, on The T Magazine Blog

One of these days, our repeated attempts to worm our way into the New York studio of the very private, very busy, very genius artist Tauba Auerbach will succeed. But in the meantime, we were pleased to see a particularly Sight Unseen-y feature on her posted last week on T Magazine's blog, penned by our friend Ken Miller for his ongoing "Under the Influence" column. It's basically an 8 Things teasing out the people, places, and objects that are currently inspiring her work, of which Miller writes on the site: "Reminiscent of the 1960s Op Art movement, especially the British painter Bridget Riley, Auerbach’s hypnotic paintings, sculptures, books and prints reflect abstraction, Minimalism and even Pop, with a meticulous attention to craft.
