Experiments in Colored Glass, Inspired by the Palette of Mexico

As avowed colored glass evangelists, we practically consider it our saintly duty to bring your attention to one of the coolest, most beautiful glass objects we've seen in years: As part of a residency program supported by the Swiss Design Mexico program and the Swiss Embassy in Mexico, Swiss designer Julie Richoz spent the last year developing these two-toned Isla vases in collaboration with the glass-blowing masters at Nouvel Studio.

We Thought We Were Over Terrazzo Until We Saw This Epic Apartment in Lithuania

Why do some trends fizz out, while some stick around and — in many cases — keep coming back stronger year after year? Take terrazzo: We've been hawking that gorgeous, endlessly reconfigurable aggregate since at least 2013, but the design world's adoration of it has hardly waned in the six years since. Still, when you find an application that stops you in your tracks, it’s worth noting, which we happily did this week with an apartment in Lithuania by DO Architects.

30 Designers and Brands We Loved at Stockholm Design Week 2019

People often ask about our favorite furniture fairs (besides Milan and New York, of course), and we've always reflexively said Stockholm, due to the elevated baseline of good taste and sheer quality of work that tends to emerge from the Scandinavian capital. But in truth, neither Monica nor I had been to Stockholm Design Week in more than a decade. And as easy as it is journalistically to report a fair from afar these days, it's impossible to replicate the emotional high that comes from discovering something amazing where you least expected it. Having just returned from a leisurely weeklong stay in Stockholm, I'm happy to report that our instincts were correct: Stockholm remains one of the most vital and exciting stops on the design calendar.

A Brand New Design Gallery in Mexico City Just Launched With an All-Star Lineup

MASA was inevitable, and MASA was what we'd been waiting for — a stake planted for high-end design within the cultural renaissance happening in Mexico City right now. Everyone talks about the city's epic food scene, and its influential art galleries, and the Zona Maco fair, and the budding starchitects building fancy museums. There's even a Design Week Mexico and a couple of good design galleries working with local talents. But before MASA debuted this past week, with an exhibition of furniture and lighting by 15 of the city's top artists and designers, there wasn't really a definitive platform for contemporary experimental design, at least not one as ambitious as this.

Meet the Florist Behind Instagram’s Dreamiest Still Lifes

Doan Ly's floral still life photographs could, in a way, be read as contemporary vanitas paintings — compositions of hyper-saturated bouquets, exotic fruits, and colored lights whose addictive, saccharine appeal might symbolize the fleetingness of beauty, and of Instagram culture itself. Yet we prefer to look at it like Ly does: The world is a shitty, shitty place right now, so let's all just take a sec to enjoy some insanely pretty flowers.

You Need These New, Color-Blocked Goblets by Helen Levi

There's a ceremonial feel to the latest collection from Brooklyn-based ceramicist Helen Levi. First, there are the goblets — a type of stemware more often associated with medieval banquets or religious rituals, to which Levi gives a resolutely modern look by color-blocking and employing a pristine matte finish. Second are the jugs, which might look as though they'd been excavated from a silty river bed were it not for the delicate palette, ranging from stony buff to rose pink.

Anyone Can Design a Custom Rug With Kasthall’s New Online Tool — Here’s Proof

Today we're excited to launch Sight Unseen's first ever product for the home: A collection of two rugs we designed for the 120-year-old Swedish company Kasthall, using their online Rug Designer tool. The tool, a new edition of which launches today at Stockholm Design Week, allows any architect, interior designer, or enthusiastic aesthete — that's us! — to create a one-off custom hand-woven or hand-tufted rug using an expansive palette of colors and patterns.
