Meet the Chair Equivalent of Freezing Your Issey Miyake Pants in Resin

It was an interest in fashion, coupled with a job in retail, that first sparked Brooklyn designer Michal Cihlar’s fascination with furniture. At the time, he was studying for a degree in architecture at NYU, but he wasn’t finding satisfaction with the drawn-out process required to realize buildings. Instead, it was a part-time job at the cult fashion shop Opening Ceremony that opened his eyes to more creative possibilities. With carpentry skills gleaned from a sculpture course and access to deadstock fabric, Cihlar started making playfully bulbous pieces that nod to the way textiles move and bounce on the body.

Paper Pulp and Oil Pastel Are Perfectly Paired in a Colorful New Collection

Seeking a distraction from the pandemic, Brazilian newcomer Barbara Bareca spent the better part of this year reimagining ordinary everyday objects by elevating them to a cheerfully colorful new level. Her debut "Gesture Object" collection comprises a selection of seven handmade wooden structures, including vases, a mirror, a tray, bowl, and bookends, each covered in a mélange of paper, glue, and water, then scribbled with an oil pastel for color effect and a textural finish.

The Best of the Rest at London Design Festival 2018

For the second year in a row, Swedish Ninja launched one of our favorite objects, this year in the form of small, mix-and-match glass sculptures. Studio Anansi capitalized on the lumpy and tubular trends with its chiseled sycamore table mirror. Skandium took up the mantle of Peter Pilotto, with its similarly color-blocked townhouse takeover. And the Ace Hotel continued its Ready Made Go collaboration with Modern Design Review, with this year's designers collaborating with local social enterprises to create each piece. Here's hoping that becomes the trend to follow us into 2019.

We recently noticed a fascination, shared among three up-and-coming designers from two different parts of the globe — Sebastian Kommer, Jinyeong Yeon, and Nice Workshop — with using off-the-shelf metal materials in new, more beautiful ways. The concept itself is nothing new, but it underscores just how much endless versatility can be found in industrial parts and profiles — and how they offer emerging designers access to industrial fabrication without the expensive factory tooling and MOQs.

For their first exhibition, Atelier LK — a newly formed interior design studio helmed by Lisa Jones and Ruby Kean — has taken over the home, leaving intact a curated selection of the artist's work and asking 36 contemporary artists and designers to respond to it.

Cool Metallics and Skittle Colors Reign in This Sardinian Boutique by Gonzalez Haase

When we think of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, certain colors come to mind: teal, for the brilliantly blue waters of the coast; terracotta for its lush buildings and native ceramics; and taupey brown for the nuraghi, a series of mysterious Bronze Age stone ruins shaped like beehives that dot the island. Gray, as a hue, definitively doesn't appear anywhere in that palette. And yet when speaking of what inspired their Porto Cervo interior for the fashion boutique Modes, the architects Gonzalez Haase pay homage to the non-color.
