How This Abandoned House Became a Rentable Desert Oasis With a Painted Pool

Before it was a designer desert retreat renting for upwards of $700 a night on Airbnb, the West and Wild house in California’s Yucca Valley was a broken-down foreclosure being sold for peanuts. It caught the eye of three friends in LA who were casually scanning for properties; a mere 24 hours later, they were the proud owners of the place, and set to work transforming it. They restored and painted the swimming pool, renovated the dramatic loft area perched above the living room, gave it a gourmet kitchen, and filled it with art by the likes of Kristen Giorgi and Robbie Simon. Fabien Cappello’s Studio is an “Island of Quiet” in the Middle of Mexico City

When asked about his relationship to color, furniture and interior designer Fabien Cappello stifles a laugh. “I find this so funny,” he says, “but I am colorblind.” This comes as somewhat of a shock after having seen the inside of Cappello’s Mexico City studio, a 1,075 square-foot space littered with designs in various stages of development: yellow and red fiberglass plant pots; a woven lounge chair with teal legs; lantern-like prototypes made of blue, orange, and pink wire.

Peter Gudrunas Has Been Blowing Glass Since the 1970s. Now His Daughter is Helping to Bring Their Practice Into the 21st Century.

The 2008 financial crisis wiped out the majority of Gudrunas’ clients, and in the following years the interest in buying fine crafts sputtered. It wasn’t until 2014 that the business was revived, when his youngest daughter, artist and filmmaker Iris Fraser-Gudrunas, stepped in to manage, eventually developing a vision for how Sirius Glassworks could evolve.

In a New Exhibition, Abstract Paintings and Anthropomorphic Vessels Pair Perfectly

In ballet terms, a pas de deux is a duet. Two dancers perform a sequence in such perfect, excruciating synchronicity that it appears they are, for the fleeting moments they inhabit the stage, two halves of the same whole. This kind of creative coupling is what curator Kitty Clark had in mind when she put together her latest show, Soul Bed, featuring painter Hannah Nowlan and ceramic artist Tatsiana Shevarenkova, which just opened its doors at Saint Cloche Gallery in Sydney, Australia.

The Ex of In House in Rhinebeck was designed by Steven Holl and his team as a conceptual manifesto, but he realized that as a high-end rental, it could help fund his non-profit architecture school and artist’s residency. Seasoned Airbnb host Sarah Hutchings stepped in to cozy up the house and make it amenable for overnight stays, and now she acts as a sort of architectural ambassador for its guests. A bold Memphis sensibility meets sunny Byron Bay ease in Australian designer Sarah Ellison’s new capsule collection “La Banda,” meaning “the stripe” in Italian. Bands of ash and walnut wood lay next to each other to create a striped pattern, and rounded and rectilinear silhouettes playfully and unexpectedly alternate. In fashion, the notion of “the stripe” has a rich and varied history — a history that Ellison, a former fashion designer and stylist, was no doubt aware of.
