You’ll Never Guess Which European Metropolis Inspired Svenja Deininger’s Latest Body of Work

Sometimes the reason you are drawn to one piece of art or another is obvious. In the case of Viennese artist Svenja Deininger — who opens "Crescendo," her third solo exhibition at Marianne Boesky Gallery, this Thursday — we could say it is because her work falls somewhere pleasingly on the spectrum between figurative and abstract. At its most abstract, it resembles the color-field painters we espouse so heartily on this site; at its most figurative, there is something almost Hockney-esque about her canvases. But sometimes the reason you are drawn to one piece of art or another reveals itself to you only later.

Like her restaurant, Dimes, Sabrina De Sousa's impeccably appointed Chinatown apartment is filled with objects she created herself, which is why we’ve been begging her for ages to photograph it — a feat we've finally pulled off thanks to our editorial collaboration with Sonos. We've teamed up with the smart speaker brand for a new storytelling series called Creative Women at Home, in which we’ll visit the homes of four influential women and find out how they live, work, relax, and listen.

Rather than squirrel away his accumulated possessions in some hidden storage space, Design Miami's Rodman Primack chooses to live with and share the things he collects in his everyday life. “There are people who are equally aesthetic and equally interested in art and design but who don’t feel any need to actually physically have the item with them," he says. "Clearly, I feel a need to have objects — to be able to touch them, look at them, hold them, and actually use them.”

At Morgan Lehman, Two Artists Exploring the Slippery Nature of Spatial Perception

Seeing the work of photographer Erin O'Keefe and painter Matt Kleberg side by side, it’s as if they are of one mind: the brightest orangey reds, the richest teals and greens, and the textured yellows; the crisp angles, the unexpected shapes, and the lively abstractions. Their current collaboration, a two-person exhibition titled Ecstatic Vernacular on view at Morgan Lehman in New York until May 19, is a conversation between the artists and their differing mediums.

A New Furniture Collection That Merges Two Top Design Trends

Somewhere around 2015, two major design trends emerged that — from time to time — have also subsequently converged. The first is something we call "warm minimalism," referring to the blonde wood / muted pastels / brass / simple shapes combo that's still going strong; the second is the Dimore Studio brand of understated glamour that skews slightly more classic, in richer textures and tones. When they're combined, you get work like Robert Sukrachand's newest collection, debuting today at the AD Design show.
