When the Australian designer Sarah Ellison released her Huggy chair two years ago, it blew up — Athena Calderone installed one in her guest room in the Hamptons, and everyone from Jake Arnold to Jenna Lyons to Sarah Sherman Samuel deployed it in their projects. “The human connection to it can’t be underestimated,” Ellison says of the chair, whose cylindrical backrest was designed to feel like a warm embrace. “People want to connect with it, touch it, feel it. And everyone needs a hug.” Wrapped in cushy shearling or velvet, the Huggy also had the advantage of a simple geometric form that stood out, yet seemed to work in all sorts of interiors. There was only one problem: If you weren’t a big-name designer with a bottomless budget, it just wasn’t that easy to get one, as is the case with most amazing furniture from Australia. But that all changed this winter, when Ellison partnered with Design Within Reach to make a significant portion of her catalog readily available in the US.
