The New Kitchen Essentials, from Hay and Danish It-Chef Frederik Bille Brahe

The collaboration between Hay and Danish chef Frederik Bille Brahe began, as so many collaborations do, at the furniture fair in Milan a year and a half ago. Charged with outfitting the tables for a Hay pop-up café, Bille Brahe set out with Hay co-founder Mette Hay to scour the Milanese flea markets for flatware, dishes, and serving pieces. The two liked working together — and the hodgepodge effect their vintage-sourced table settings had — so much that Mette called upon Frederik to help curate the pieces in a new line launched this week called Hay Kitchen Market.

A Pastel-Hued Parisian Hotel is Our Newest Design Destination

The headboards should have been a dead giveaway: At the new Hotel Bienvenue in Paris, the asymmetrical, velvet-trimmed, tone-on-tone headboards — mixed with statement-y, wall-hung iron sconces — are the focal point in each room, just as they are in another Parisian boutique hotel we recently featured. Turns out they are owned by the same young hotelier, but designed by two different, equally amazing female talents.

This Colorful Studio Just Launched Their Darkest Collection Yet

Did you know there was a 100% Design South Africa? We didn't! That is, until we caught wind of the work coming out of it by one of our favorite studios, Dokter & Misses (who we first featured way back in 2011). At the show, which ran from August 9-13, the Johannesburg-based duo launched three new projects — two of which represent an aesthetic leap from their typically colorful aesthetic.

The Game’s New Online Shop

With Labor Day around the corner (we'll be taking off this Monday, along with the rest of America) we're allowing ourselves to get just a tiny bit excited about the impending fall. Sweaters, the color navy, and the smell of burning leaves are right up there among our favorite things. Fall is also the time when we stop spending our waking hours wondering when we can next get to the beach and start spending them a bit more inside on the computer, shopping for knickknacks that will make the homes we're about to spend a whole lot more time in even cozier. Our newest destination is The Game, a brand new shop that exists both online and in two Belgian outposts, founded and curated by Alexis Ryngaert, who's also behind of one of our all-time favorite design galleries, Victor Hunt.

This Norwegian Auction Just Made Us Excited for the Fall Design Season

Today we got word of a new auction launching in Oslo next month, which we hope will be the first of many: Called Unika, the event — held at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts from September 9-10 and online from September 1-10 — is a collaboration between the biennial event Designer’s Saturday, Oslo's oldest auction house Blomqvist, and Klubben, the Norwegian designers organization.

These Classical-Meets-Contemporary Ceramics Are a Major Discovery

It's not every day that we make a discovery on the level of Nicolette Johnson, when some random Instagram rabbit hole leads us to a trove so vast we can hardly believe no one had tipped us off to it sooner. But that's exactly what happened last month, when we stumbled onto an image of Johnson's vases and found ourselves practically hyperventilating — not just over the works themselves, but the fact that the young Brisbane-based talent only started working with ceramics at all less than two years ago.

As you might have guessed from yesterday's story, there's nothing we love more than turning the lens on our own contributors — if only because to interview someone is to get to know them in an intimate way that casual conversation often can't approximate. Case in point: an Q&A and photo essay from earlier this year with one of our favorite SU photographers, Pippa Drummond. Called Gravity's Rainbow, it's a joyful, color-filled editorial that features contemporary and vintage furniture from the likes of Bower, Anna Karlin, Apparatus, Gino Sarfatti and more.

A Dutch Duo Making “Furniture for Your Wall”

Three years ago, Korean graphic designer Dongyoung Lee and Dutch artist Michiel Hilbrink moved to a "woon/werkatelier," a living and working studio for artists in Amsterdam — not originally built to live and work in — and became greatly inspired by their undefined situation. Their new collaboration, Things of Morel, developed at the intersection of interior decoration, object design and sculpture, and the latest collection, called Sun Fluid, stems from their own experiments with raw materials.
