The Best of the 2017 Milan Furniture Fair, Part I

When you're on the ground at the Milan Furniture Fair, things can seem like a total blur — you're walking miles a day, eating on the go, drinking too much wine, and seeing more new things than your brain can actually process at once. The Best of New York Design Week 2016

New York Design Week may come hot on the heels each year of the all-consuming behemoth that is the Milan furniture fair, but to pay it any less attention would be a mistake — between Sight Unseen OFFSITE, ICFF, Colony, Wanted, and the goings-on at outposts like the Future Perfect and Matter, the days when America's most important contemporary design event was simply a watered-down rehash of Europe's are indisputably over. Here's a roundup our favorite finds from this year's show.

Lava Rock — So Hot Right Now

The Guadalajara-based studio Peca made coasters out of it. Formafantasma paired it with more refined materials like brass and glass. Aleks Pollner and Adrien Rovero are obsessed with it. Now, the latest designer to be inspired by plucking basalt from the earth and fashioning it into something, well, fashionable is Laura Bilde, a furniture and interior design student from Denmark who sent us this seriously on-trend lighting series this week.

Designers Interpret the Classic Tolix A Chair

We aren't quite sure how we missed this project — considering both our affinity for the classic Tolix A chair (we might own seven (!) of them ourselves) and our affection for the designers involved — but in Milan last month, the French company celebrated its 80th anniversary and in doing so invited eight design studios to reinterpret its most famous offering.
