From Their Artfully Curated Brooklyn Design Shop, Guest Editors Lichen NYC Are Helping to Democratize Design

By definition, “lichen” is a moss composed of two or sometimes many organisms operating in a symbiotic relationship with one another. In 2017, we opened the doors to Lichen NYC, our take on accessible furniture — both vintage and contemporary — settled harmoniously into a single space, with an aim to represent that spirit of symbiosis and inclusion in the design community. Our goal, in first one store, and now another, is to push design forward by empowering individuals with knowledge of past designs and helping them make sense of how to incorporate those pieces into current living scenarios

Eny Lee Parker Designed a Tiny, Perfect Room in Oven-Bake Clay During Last Week’s Quarantine

“Tedious tasks are my love language,” reads the caption in one of Eny Lee Parker’s process videos, shared with candor last week on Instagram Stories. With design weeks canceled around the world and all of us confined to our homes, the Brooklyn-based designer is making the best of things with "Clay Play," an initiative she created that challenges her followers to design their own ideal room in oven-bake clay.

A Vintage and Contemporary Design Gallery in Mexico City Whose “It” Factor is No Accident

Despite the off-the-cuff name, Chic By Accident and its taste-making founder Emmanuel Picault don’t seem to leave much up to chance. Since opening up in the Roma neighborhood in 2001, Picault and his collaborators have slowly been masterminding Mexico City’s reputation as a must-visit destination for great art and design. Part shop, part gallery, part meeting place for the international design set, Picault has something of a Midas touch when it comes to projects.

Why is This Early 1900s Swedish Minimalist Suddenly All Over Instagram?

We’re not sure when it was that we first started noticing the late Swedish designer Axel Einar Hjorth popping up everywhere we looked. But whenever it was, you can now consider us full converts to the church of Hjorth, whose work remains disarmingly fresh 60 years after his death, mixing as it does both Art Deco and Modernist influences, and a sense of sophistication with something more primitive.

This Norwegian Auction Just Made Us Excited for the Fall Design Season

Today we got word of a new auction launching in Oslo next month, which we hope will be the first of many: Called Unika, the event — held at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts from September 9-10 and online from September 1-10 — is a collaboration between the biennial event Designer’s Saturday, Oslo's oldest auction house Blomqvist, and Klubben, the Norwegian designers organization.
