LDF 2018 Preview: A Spotlight on Uruguayan Designers

It's nestled directly between Brazil and Buenos Aires, but you don't hear a whole lot about Uruguay in this part of the world. A new exhibition launching during the London Design Festival next week, though, is set to change that: Hilos Invisibles at Aram Gallery will give seven Montevideo studios a platform to present themselves on the global design scene, and the London-based but Uruguayan-born designer Matteo Fogale has helped groom them for their debut.

Visit the 200-Year-Old Portuguese Vineyard That Pierre Yovanovich Turned Into a Chic New Hotel

When the French winemaker Philippe Austruy purchased the Quinta da Corte vineyard in 2012, the 200-year-old property was in a state of utter neglect and disrepair. But by this past July, when I drove two hours from Porto to reach its perch in the hills of Portugal's Douro Valley, it had been completely transformed — turned into a luxe country inn by the buzzy French architect Pierre Yovanovich.

Ellsworth Kelly–Inspired Sculptures in Metal and Glass, By Two of Seattle’s Best Designers

The last time Jamie Iacoli teamed up with glass artist John Hogan, in 2014, it was for a series of lamps and tables released under the banner of Iacoli & McAllister, the Seattle-based furniture company she was running at the time with fellow designer Brian McAllister. Iacoli’s second collaboration with Hogan — three large tabletop sculptures that launched this past May at the Finnish fashion brand Samuji’s Soho flagship — features a similar metal-meets-glass construction, yet nearly everything else has changed.

With the move of Collective Design back to March, NYC x Design — nowadays jokingly referred to as "New York Design Month" — technically shrunk a bit this year to just 15 days long, from the beginning of Egg Collective's Designing Women show to the last day of ICFF. Yet its cornucopia of content was as impressive as ever.
