While IMM Cologne and Maison et Objet aren't the most outwardly exciting fairs on the design calendar, they can be particularly fun for us to cover. The reason has to do with why we love antique shopping so much: It can be more gratifying to make small, triumphant discoveries amidst a sea of less-relevant items than to be surrounded by perfection at every turn. Starting a Contemporary Design Collection? Check Out This New Online Auction Series

An online auction launched this week by Sothebys features only 23 pieces, from a Colorado gallery called Maker + Place, but it represents something bigger — the start of a new series of no-buyer's-reserve, online-only design sales that the art-auction giant plans to repeat regularly with different curators and assortments. Because they'll focus solely on contemporary pieces, with diverse price points and a super-straightforward bidding process, they're perfect for anyone starting a collection.

Thus OCC Market was born. Opening today at the Lower East Side boutique Coming Soon, it's a shoppable exhibition of obsessive compulsive collections by 10 object enthusiasts in design, food, and fashion.

Memphis Meets Secession in L.A.’s Coolest New Bar Interior

When the New York interiors firm Home Studios presented its first collection of lighting and furniture at our OFFSITE show earlier this year, the pieces were a culmination of an unusually prolific track record of custom design and fabrication. Having seen the firm's newest project, the West Hollywood bar Bibo Ergo Sum, in which Home designed every single element but the chairs, we can only imagine how ridiculously good their second collection is going to be.

Two Furniture Collections That Prove the Mexican Design Scene Is on the Rise

These Chilean Stone Vessels Are Our Newest South American Design Obsession

While there's no official equivalent of Slow Food in the design world, there will always be something particularly nice about projects that take the same traditionally made, locally focused approach — especially when the results have as contemporary an aesthetic as Rodrigo Bravo's new Monolith Series, which was crafted by a Chilean artisan out of Chilean stone.
