The Best of Milan Design Week 2019, Part III — Salone del Mobile

Today we're sharing the best launches from Salone del Mobile, the 2.5 million-square-foot fairgrounds outside the city, where some of our favorites included the Bouroullecs' découpaged ceramic vases for Vitra, Stefan Diez's purple modular recyclable polypropylene sofa for Magis, and Michael Anastassiades's expressive track lighting system for Flos — possibly the first and only time we'll wax poetic about track lighting on this site.

The Belgian Designers Making Candy-Colored Furniture in Their Backyard

Though now partners in work and life, Jef De Brabander and Kathleen Opdenacker of the Antwerp-based Nortstudio arrived at where they are via two very different paths: He’s an industrial engineer, she’s a graphic designer. No wonder, then, that the work they’ve produced since joining forces in 2016 has exhibited such a symbiotic relationship between color and form.

While IMM Cologne and Maison et Objet aren't the most outwardly exciting fairs on the design calendar, they can be particularly fun for us to cover. The reason has to do with why we love antique shopping so much: It can be more gratifying to make small, triumphant discoveries amidst a sea of less-relevant items than to be surrounded by perfection at every turn. In a New Exhibition, Six Ceramicists Try Their Hand At Furniture

For Lawson-Fenning in Los Angeles, Bari Ziperstein, Michele Quan, Jonathan Cross, Heather Rosenman, Victoria Morris, and Beth Katz (the artist behind Mt. Washington Pottery) have each created a series of ceramic tables, including stacked, saturated totems by BZippy, Brutalist slabs by Jonathan Cross, and Eastern iconography by MQuan. In other words, each piece is a recognizable extension of the artist's current body of work, but unique in its point of view.
