Inside the Soviet-Style Homes of Georgian Duo Rooms, As Shot By T Magazine

Earlier this month, the Tbilisi, Georgia–based design duo Rooms had their 18th- and 19th-century homes shot for T Magazine's Greats issue, with results so lovely we immediately asked for permission to reprint all the outtakes. Click through to see how they "incorporated into their pared-down aesthetic the distinctively Soviet style they grew up with."

We Spent Two Months With 12 Artists in a Tuscan Paradise

When you tell people that you just got back from a two-month stay in a 19th-century Tuscan villa with three swimming pools where you had your own artist's studio and a gourmet chef cooking you dinner every night, the first thing they tend to do is giggle: It sounds like you're making it up. But the Villa Lena is no fairy tale, it's a very real place with a very real residency program that we participated in this summer, and documented here with the help of Berlin art director Sarah Illenberger.

Fair Report

At the Biennale Interieur Kortrijk 2016

Situated less than two hours by train from both London and Paris — but without the steep costs of either — Belgium is an ideal place to do business, which is probably why the Kortrijk furniture fair has been going strong for 25 years as of this week. Other good reasons: Maniera, Muller Van Severen, Sylvain Willenz, and all the other local creative powerhouses who pitch in to make it interesting.

Saturday Selects

Week of October 10, 2016

A weekly Saturday recap to share with you our favorite links, discoveries, exhibitions, and more from the past seven days. This week was all about where we'll be doing our fall shopping: at a cactus and ceramics pop-up in New York, at the upcoming sale of David Bowie's Memphis trove (we wish), and at a handful of great new stores, including the achingly hip Seattle boutique Rizom, pictured above.

80 Years Later, This Vase Is (Still) the Ultimate Styling Object

Organic forms are back in style, so it felt like the perfect time to revisit one of the genre’s most enduring examples: the Aalto vase. Another good reason? It's the vase's 80th anniversary, and to celebrate, we've pulled a selection of images proving that it's (still) the ultimate styling object, no matter where it goes or what it's filled with — the LBD of housewares, basically.

Five Must-See Fall Exhibitions

Winter is coming — before we go into our deep annual Netflix hibernation, we always make it a point to trek out to see all the gallery and museum shows we'll probably be skipping once the sky darkens and snow starts piling up. Below are our five must-see picks for this month, from the big Agnes Martin retrospective opening at the Guggenheim this weekend to a small group show of Sight Unseen favorites Chiaozza, John Hogan, Calico Wallpaper, and Amanda Ringstad.

A Breathtaking Furniture Installation Staged Inside a Famed Brutalist House

When we named Jonathan Muecke to our American Design Hot list in 2014, the enigmatic Minnesota architect summed up his motivations with a 1963 George Brecht quote about seeking precision in objects — the same kind of precision, presumably, that he saw in the starkly angular 1974 Van Wassenhove House by Belgian architect Juliaan Lampens, where he recently spent a week making a new body of work for Maniera gallery.

These Tiny, Affordable Nudes Put a Contemporary Spin on a Classical Genre

As NG Collective Studio, sisters Laura Naples and Kristen Giorgi sell their collaborative artworks on Uprise Art, an online gallery representing up and coming talents. That's where we spotted these gestural watercolor Mini Nudes. "I played around with the concept of how, using color and shape, the nude figures could relate to modern elements that we currently see in design and fashion," Giorgi says.

A Brooklyn Furniture Studio Goes Minimal in Geometric Steel

When we first featured the Brooklyn design-build studio Uhuru, back in 2010, they were known for creating imaginative furniture collections out of salvaged materials, but their newest collection feels like a leap in a whole new direction. After finding success last year with a geometric blackened-steel console called Tack, they've expanded the series to include stools and end tables that would make Donald Judd proud.

Surprise, Surprise: The Brooklyn Home of Dimes’s Chef is As Gorgeous As Her Food

If you’re not quite sure how a chef like Alissa Wagner fits into Sight Unseen’s usual focus on design and visual art, then you’ve probably never been to Dimes, the restaurant she opened with her longtime friend Sabrina De Sousa in 2013. The pioneer of a new apex of cool on East Canal Street in Manhattan, Dimes sells Cassie Griffin pottery and edible fragrances by Regime des Fleurs, and serves diners bowls of rainbow-colored food on tables inspired by Matisse cut-outs. Some people go because it’s a scene, and because the design vibe is right, but most go because those bowls — filled with things like kale gomae, wild sumac stems, and mejadra — are visual art in just about any sense of the word.

A Day’s Worth of Designy Studio Essentials From Need Supply’s New Housewares Arm

Need Supply has always been one of the first places we look when we're in the market for affordable yet fashion-y basics. But this month, the online retailer officially launched Need Supply Life, its permanent home for designs for the home. After taking a spin through the site, we realized that its wares would be equally suited to the studio, so we put together a game plan for upgrading your typical workday with gear sourced from the new site — not to mention some of our favorite makers.
