The Best of Milan Design Week 2019, Part II — Salone Satellite

We're devoting all of our coverage this week to the 2019 Milan furniture fair, from the best things we saw around town, to the best of this year's Euroluce show, to the up-and-coming designers and new brands we discovered along the way. Today we're sharing our 13 favorite collections at Salone Satellite, the section of the Salone del Mobile fairgrounds devoted to emerging talents — which is where we discovered many a Sight Unseen veteran back in the day, from Sebastian Herkner to Ana Kras.

The Best of Milan Design Week 2019, Part I

Each year in Milan brings something truly wonderful to behold, whether it's furniture hoisted into inflatable bubbles (Nilufar Depot), a newly open-to-the-public Piero Portaluppi interior (Massimo de Carlo Gallery), or the coolest amoeba-shaped marble tables we've ever seen (by Studio Binocle, which we're featuring here today). We'll be devoting our whole week to coverage from the fair so stay tuned, and click through for the first of our favorites.

The Best Thing We Saw in Milan Today, Day 4

This week we're featuring quick hits from some of our favorite things at the Milan furniture fair that caught our eye. Today's snapshot features three table lamps from three different designers in three very different materials: Bec Brittain's new marble Heron lamp for Mmairo, Maarten de Ceulaer's stained glass beauty for the Doppia Firma exhibition, and the tortoise and aluminum Obelisk from one of our favorite newcomers of the week, Kabinet.

The Best Thing We Saw in Milan Today, Day 3

After five years, Dzek — you know, the makers of your favorite terrazzo kitchen — returned to the fair with another architectural material with a vast applications: Called Ex-Cinere, it's a collection of tiles — with serious 70s vibes — developed in collaboration with Formafantasma, stemming from the Dutch-based duo's longtime exploration into volcanic rock.

Sight Unseen is on the ground at the Milan Furniture Fair this week and we’ll be bringing you loads of coverage next week, plus moment-by-moment round-ups on our Instagram Stories. But until our rounds here are done, we’ll be featuring quick hits from some of our favorite things that caught our eye. Our pick today? These skewed, psychedelic checkerboard rugs by Martino Gamper for cc-tapis, whose color-blocked not-quite-grids result in a collision of textures and hues.

The Best Thing We Saw in Milan Today, Day 1

The 9 Best Things We Saw at DesignMarch 2019 in Iceland

Iceland's DesignMarch is no New York design week — and we would never expect as much from a country with a total population of 340,000 — but like every other up-and-coming design scene around the world, from Norway to China, its practitioners are getting more savvy, more entrepreneurial, and more ambitious, resulting in more impressive work all around. Click through to see our favorite discoveries from our recent trip to this year's fair.

17 Projects We Loved at This Year’s Collectible Fair in Brussels

We didn't have the pleasure of personally attending this year's Collectible design fair in Brussels, where Sight Unseen hosted an installation by Objects of Common Interest, yet word traveled quickly back to us that those who did had taken to referring to our presentation as "the famous booth," an accolade that Instagram seemed to confirm. We were flattered to hear it, of course, but also honored to share the spotlight with so many other great presentations by galleries and up-and-coming designers. Click through to see our favorites.

Five Artists We Loved At Armory Arts Week 2019

Armory Arts Week was admittedly a little weird this year. Collective Design took a sabbatical, as did NADA, which hosted a gallery open downtown in place of its sprawling art fair. Spring/Break moved out of its former Condé Nast digs and we never quite made it to the new location. And, oddest of all, the pier that typically hosts VOLTA showed structural damage at the eleventh hour, leaving a raft of galleries and artists homeless (some were folded into a last-minute show at David Zwirner galleries titled, appropriately, Plan B). Luckily, there was still plenty to love.

And for the second year in a row, Sight Unseen is excited to debut a special curatorial project at the fair: For Sight Unseen Presents, the NYC- and Athens-based studio Objects of Common Interest will create an immersive mirrored installation called Landscape.

30 Designers and Brands We Loved at Stockholm Design Week 2019

People often ask about our favorite furniture fairs (besides Milan and New York, of course), and we've always reflexively said Stockholm, due to the elevated baseline of good taste and sheer quality of work that tends to emerge from the Scandinavian capital. But in truth, neither Monica nor I had been to Stockholm Design Week in more than a decade. And as easy as it is journalistically to report a fair from afar these days, it's impossible to replicate the emotional high that comes from discovering something amazing where you least expected it. Having just returned from a leisurely weeklong stay in Stockholm, I'm happy to report that our instincts were correct: Stockholm remains one of the most vital and exciting stops on the design calendar.

The 40+ Best Things We Saw at IMM Cologne and Maison & Objet 2019

Our trend-spotting needle hasn't exactly gone haywire in the first few weeks of this year — and we, for one, think that might be a good thing, considering how frenetic the pace of trends has been of late. IMM Cologne and Maison & Objet, the first two big furniture fairs of the year, have also traditionally not been the first places you might go to scout for said trends, whether owing to their spot on the design calendar (just before Milan) or the regional peculiarities of each host country (Cologne, to this day, always has a preponderance of Bauhaus-inspired pieces). And yet, scrolling through our picks this year, you'll see a few things that look just different enough that they might be harbingers of things to come.
