30 Designers and Brands We Loved at Stockholm Design Week 2019

People often ask about our favorite furniture fairs (besides Milan and New York, of course), and we've always reflexively said Stockholm, due to the elevated baseline of good taste and sheer quality of work that tends to emerge from the Scandinavian capital. But in truth, neither Monica nor I had been to Stockholm Design Week in more than a decade. And as easy as it is journalistically to report a fair from afar these days, it's impossible to replicate the emotional high that comes from discovering something amazing where you least expected it. Having just returned from a leisurely weeklong stay in Stockholm, I'm happy to report that our instincts were correct: Stockholm remains one of the most vital and exciting stops on the design calendar.

The 40+ Best Things We Saw at IMM Cologne and Maison & Objet 2019

Our trend-spotting needle hasn't exactly gone haywire in the first few weeks of this year — and we, for one, think that might be a good thing, considering how frenetic the pace of trends has been of late. IMM Cologne and Maison & Objet, the first two big furniture fairs of the year, have also traditionally not been the first places you might go to scout for said trends, whether owing to their spot on the design calendar (just before Milan) or the regional peculiarities of each host country (Cologne, to this day, always has a preponderance of Bauhaus-inspired pieces). And yet, scrolling through our picks this year, you'll see a few things that look just different enough that they might be harbingers of things to come.

Our 30+ Favorite Finds from Design Miami 2018

For Design Miami, the way to announce itself as different from all other design fairs is to, well, embrace the Miami-ness of it all — whether that means an ultra-saturated backdrop (as with Atelier Courbet this year and Demisch Danant last year), an exhibition devoted exclusively to water fountains (Sabine Marcelis x Fendi), or, as with the Chris Wolston light for The Future Perfect at top of this post, an explosion of hyper-colorful flora and fauna.

The Best of the Rest at London Design Festival 2018

For the second year in a row, Swedish Ninja launched one of our favorite objects, this year in the form of small, mix-and-match glass sculptures. Studio Anansi capitalized on the lumpy and tubular trends with its chiseled sycamore table mirror. Skandium took up the mantle of Peter Pilotto, with its similarly color-blocked townhouse takeover. And the Ace Hotel continued its Ready Made Go collaboration with Modern Design Review, with this year's designers collaborating with local social enterprises to create each piece. Here's hoping that becomes the trend to follow us into 2019.

A Short List of Everything We Loved At This Year’s Design Miami/Basel

Even if nothing else of interest had launched at last week's Design Miami/Basel, we would have still done this round-up if only to feature Galerie VIVID's Column Paintings by Thomas Trum, seen at the top of this post; nothing about the recent Design Academy Eindhoven's previous two-dimensional work could have prepared us for the awesomeness of these two-toned painted shelving units. Luckily, there was other good stuff at the fair to be found as well.

With the move of Collective Design back to March, NYC x Design — nowadays jokingly referred to as "New York Design Month" — technically shrunk a bit this year to just 15 days long, from the beginning of Egg Collective's Designing Women show to the last day of ICFF. Yet its cornucopia of content was as impressive as ever.

The Best of Milan Design Week 2018 — Part IV

In case you couldn't tell, we thought this year's Milan fair was a pretty great one, as evidenced by the fact that it's the fourth and final day of our coverage, and we're still featuring some of our favorite things we saw all week — Dimore Studio's enormous, flower-filled vitrine, Hay's takeover of Atelier Clerici with WeWork and Sonos, the outstanding Lina Bo Bardi show at Nilufar Depot, and Nov Gallery's iridescent barbells (above), among others.

In the third of our posts chronicling our Milan design week finds, we're focusing on the Salone Satellite. It's definitely the most high-stakes event for us during each year's fair, the place where we either strike gold with a ton of new studio discoveries or feel let down by a lack of collections that really manage to turn our heads. The projects we did get excited about this year are catalogued below, and if we're lucky, the best of these names will continue to appear on this site for years to come.

The Best of Milan Design Week 2018, Part I

This year marked our tenth anniversary of attending the Salone del Mobile in Milan, and this year's fair felt a bit... different. The showrooms were more crowded (sometimes uncomfortably so), the brands were more lavish (Hermes's installation employing 150,000 Moroccan tiles rivaled only Flos's poured concrete last year in terms of sheer material costs), and the trends felt less obvious (we're living in such maximalist times that it can feel like all colors are suddenly trending at once). The Best Thing We Saw in Milan Today, Day 5

Created by the Berlin-based Studio Greiling for Kinnasand's Toyo Ito–designed Milan showroom, the STRUCTURES series uses powder-coated, architectural steel tubes to lift the Swedish textiles company's knotted or woven wool rugs to a new height, elevating the formerly flat surfaces into a new dimension: furniture.
