RIP Design Legend Ingo Maurer, Who Was More Relevant Than Ever

In a strange twist of fate, we had a story on the recent resurgence of legendary lighting designer Ingo Maurer on our calendar for today, even before we'd heard of his passing at the age of 87. We had of course followed Maurer's work over the course of our 15 years in the design world, but we had never gone in for Maurer's more purposefully kitschy designs. But to focus solely on those works is ignore Maurer's sheer breadth of output, and to dismiss a collection of his lights that has recently begun to feel more contemporary and relevant than ever.

No, You’re Not Imagining It — These Three Vintage Lamps Are Suddenly Everywhere

In design circles, there are a few things that might be considered "Instagram famous" — certain plants, to be sure; Luis Barragán interiors; Ricardo Bofill exteriors; the Atelier Brancusi replica at the Centre Pompidou; anthuriums. But in recent months, we've noticed three lamps popping up with such frequency that they might also be ascribed that title. Each lamp is vintage, but perhaps the more crucial thing they have in common is that each represents a trend currently winging its way through the design world.

Tour the Chic, Vintage-Filled Silverlake Home of an Up-and-Coming L.A. Interior Designer

The mid-century Silverlake home that Tiffany Howell shares with her husband and son gave the interior designer and Night Palm owner 1,500 square feet in which to fully realize pet ideas like a "postmodern Golden Girls" bedroom, making it the perfect second installation in our Creative Women at Home collaboration with Sonos. We’ve teamed up with the smart speaker brand for a storytelling series in which we’re visiting the homes of four influential women to find out how they live, work, relax, and listen.

Design Miami’s Rodman Primack Gives Us a Tour of His Collection-Filled Home

Rather than squirrel away his accumulated possessions in some hidden storage space, Design Miami's Rodman Primack chooses to live with and share the things he collects in his everyday life. “There are people who are equally aesthetic and equally interested in art and design but who don’t feel any need to actually physically have the item with them," he says. "Clearly, I feel a need to have objects — to be able to touch them, look at them, hold them, and actually use them.”

At Home With the Owner of Casa Shop, Our Favorite Store On Instagram

A thoughtfully presented online store selling vintage objects, Casa Shop maintains a web presence but mostly operates in the manner of Instagram’s many “digital auctions,” where stores commit to sell to whomever is the first to DM off a post. Hand-blown vases, iridescent glasses, wicker baskets, onyx bookends — these are a few of the things shoppers can expect to cull (if they move fast, as things often sell quickly) from Casa Shop’s oft-changing inventory.

See How Hawkins New York’s Founders Transformed a 1750s Farmhouse Into a Colorful, Modern Home

Hawkins started out primarily producing work for other designers, including Workstead, Alyson Fox, MINNA, and Slowood Studio, but the brand now specializes in simple, elevated basics designed in-house — think enameled bowls, recycled glassware, insanely chic dustpans (it's a thing), and super-saturated waffle towels. But most of the pieces have evolved from a need in Denoly and Blaine's own home, which they bought in seriously dilapidated fashion almost five years ago and have been working on ever since.

Set Your eBay Alert for These Amazing, Vintage Kaj Franck Goblets

Our jaws hit the floor in utter surprise and delight last week when, in the process of researching our underrated glassware story, we discovered a glass-related pastime of Finnish designer Kaj Franck's that we had no idea existed (and one that pretty much flies in the face of what we always thought of as his minimal, MCM oeuvre): making elaborate art-glass goblets.

Amazing 80s Interiors, and the Furniture That Was Made for Them, Now On View at Volume

Anyone paying attention probably gets that for us, the Memphis train left the station awhile ago — we were heralding the return of Sottsass in 2007, and our interests have long since shifted. But that doesn't mean we're opposed to every attempt to bring back the '80s, not in the least. Case in point: We highly recommend seeing the current show on view at Volume Gallery in Chicago, which celebrates the '80s interiors of the Chicago architecture firm Krueck + Sexton with the launch of limited-edition reissues of three of their most iconic chair designs from that time.
