The Madrid-based Burr Studio recently played a neat trick, transforming an office in their native city into a home without modifying the layout in the slightest. For a project called NN06, surface coverings on the ceilings, floors, and walls were removed, leaving a clean slate, and rooms were divided using color-blocking and changes in materiality as their only system of delineation.

A Decadent Debut Furniture Collection By One of Our Favorite French Duos

There's something we really appreciate about the first collection of furniture by French interior designers Hauvette & Madani, and that is its unabashed embrace of a decadent party atmosphere, even in the midst of a pandemic. Inspired by a kind of 1920s salon / '70s-era cocktail party vibe, the collection — called Amuse Bouche — includes furniture, lighting, and accessories made from luxe materials like alabaster, smoked bronze mirror, silk, and carved oak.

25 Chairs By 25 Designers at a New Copenhagen Café

While the mismatched-suite-of-chairs-around-a-dining-table trend has been going strong for several years now, this might be the first time we've seen it applied well in a commercial context: In Copenhagen, the prolific studio Tableau, in collaboration with Australian designer Ari Prasetya, recently completed the spatial design for a new cafeteria at the Copenhagen Contemporary museum, called Connie-Connie. For the project, Tableau asked 25 different artists, architects, and designers to create a chair or bench made from offcut wood provided by the Danish company Dinesen.

Though He Designs for Of-the-Moment Brands, Mario Tsai Isn’t Inspired By Trends

When Hangzhou-based designer Mario Tsai was growing up, he’d take apart the electronics in the house. Luckily for him, his parents were forgiving. He’d also collect old, tossed-out electric components and scrap pieces of wood to make new things. “I made many things that adults would consider strange,” he says, but that early freedom to explore has proven foundational for his design practice. A research-centered approach is the basis of Mario Tsai Studio, founded in the summer of 2014, which produces elegant, contemporary furniture and conceptual lighting design.

With Its Whimsical Ceramics and Mirrored Lounges, Project 213A is Bringing a Bit of Joy to 2022

If you needed more proof that we're living in something of a golden age of small-batch production, look no further than the new design brand and housewares shop Project 213A, which was founded in 2020 by four friends and is based between London, Paris, and Portugal. In the last two years they've built up an enviable portfolio of that mixes the kind of ceramic silhouettes that are popular right now with wild cards that keep you guessing like a fully mirrored low lounge, a multicolored tiled bench, and a chestnut wood milking stool, with one lone leg carved in the shape of a foot.

In Mexico City, An Up-and-Coming Design Studio Inspired by Institutional Aesthetics

The objects and furniture made by the Mexico City–based design studio Panorammma are difficult to pin in one particular box. Their concepts pivot from material focus — such as in their Neolithic Thinker chair, an upturned U-shaped seat made of volcanic tezontle stone — to abstract ideas, like the Sisyphean Table, a glass-topped Vignelli-esque cocktail table inspired by the concept of the absurd. But the thread that connects all of these approaches is a steady preoccupation with narrative and memory.
