Your Guide to the 40+ Designers Who Made This Year’s Design Miami Great

Whatever anyone's opinion on last week's Design Miami fair, we could all agree on at least one thing — thank God there were no bananas. There were a few cheesy star power moments, to be sure, but compared to the circus at Art Basel, the design fair felt like a bastion of integrity and sound judgment. In our tent, we had lustrous, emerald-green consoles, a sustainably-sourced hairy pink bench, and the coolest hand-sculpted fireplace we've ever seen. In theirs, people were lined up for miles to take a selfie with a piece of fruit.

30 Projects We Loved from Dutch Design Week 2019

A feeling of urgency pervaded this year's Dutch Design Week. It was clear from many of the works on show that the focus of the designer is shifting; no longer is good aesthetic judgment and a well-designed clever product the aspiration. Ego and vision are going out of style, to be replaced by attempts to understand the inter-connected systems in which design sits.

If you've ever looked closely at coverage of the annual Design Parade festival in France, we're guessing that like us, your reaction was probably a mixture of bafflement and awe. How do they manage to get so many new objects and new ideas in one (tiny) place, not to mention so many balls-to-the-wall interiors with what appear to be no-expense-spared, move-in-tomorrow production values? Six More Things We Loved at This Year’s Design Miami/Basel

The buzziest thing about this week's Design Miami/Basel show might have been the controversy over Virgil Abloh's collaboration with Vitra, but there were a few other major standouts we saw, such as Floris Wubben's increasingly complex and ambitious experiments with extrusion for The Future Perfect, stylist Connie Hüsser's curated object menagerie, and Franco-Danish duo OrtaMiklos's collection of blobby furniture inspired by Roman decadence. Philippe Malouin on How He Created What Just Might Be Basel’s Most Unusual Collection Ever

Every year, it seems like the contemporary work exhibited at the premiere design fairs gets more intricate and labor-intensive, more whimsical and wacky, more conceptual and process-driven. At this week's Design Miami Basel show, however, Salon 94 Design is departing from that convention in an epic way, with a presentation called Industrial Office that draws on basic ideas and questions from Philippe Malouin's work on commercial office furniture, but pushed to extremes in terms of materials, engineering, and fabrication. We spoke with Malouin to find out more.

17 Projects We Loved at This Year’s Collectible Fair in Brussels

We didn't have the pleasure of personally attending this year's Collectible design fair in Brussels, where Sight Unseen hosted an installation by Objects of Common Interest, yet word traveled quickly back to us that those who did had taken to referring to our presentation as "the famous booth," an accolade that Instagram seemed to confirm. We were flattered to hear it, of course, but also honored to share the spotlight with so many other great presentations by galleries and up-and-coming designers. Click through to see our favorites.

Our 30+ Favorite Finds from Design Miami 2018

For Design Miami, the way to announce itself as different from all other design fairs is to, well, embrace the Miami-ness of it all — whether that means an ultra-saturated backdrop (as with Atelier Courbet this year and Demisch Danant last year), an exhibition devoted exclusively to water fountains (Sabine Marcelis x Fendi), or, as with the Chris Wolston light for The Future Perfect at top of this post, an explosion of hyper-colorful flora and fauna.

The Best of the Rest at London Design Festival 2018

For the second year in a row, Swedish Ninja launched one of our favorite objects, this year in the form of small, mix-and-match glass sculptures. Studio Anansi capitalized on the lumpy and tubular trends with its chiseled sycamore table mirror. Skandium took up the mantle of Peter Pilotto, with its similarly color-blocked townhouse takeover. And the Ace Hotel continued its Ready Made Go collaboration with Modern Design Review, with this year's designers collaborating with local social enterprises to create each piece. Here's hoping that becomes the trend to follow us into 2019.

The Best of Milan Design Week 2018 — Part IV

In case you couldn't tell, we thought this year's Milan fair was a pretty great one, as evidenced by the fact that it's the fourth and final day of our coverage, and we're still featuring some of our favorite things we saw all week — Dimore Studio's enormous, flower-filled vitrine, Hay's takeover of Atelier Clerici with WeWork and Sonos, the outstanding Lina Bo Bardi show at Nilufar Depot, and Nov Gallery's iridescent barbells (above), among others.
